Portmarnock has a proud place in aviation history as the starting point for pioneering journeys including the first solo westbound transatlantic flight on August 18th 1932. A limestone, bronze and stainless steel sculpture commemorates this legacy, and it’s just one of the things to discover in this charming seaside town.
The beach in Portmarnock also known as the Velvet Strand, stretches out for 3 miles so little ones will have plenty of space to run around and splash in the sea.
There’s a lifeguarding service here, so it’s a great place for the kids to go for a paddle in the sea, definitely don’t forget to bring along the swimming costumes! Bring along the bucket and spade too, because the best way for water babies to dry off at the beach is by making sandcastles.
If you fancy a walk set off along the Portmarnock coast road, traversing Portmarnock Beach and passing the 6th Century St Marnock’s Church. Head for the Velvet Strand and continue on past the Martello Tower, pressing on to reach the High Rock and Middle Rock near Robswall, which is another walking area open for you to try. Conclude your walk as you range up Malahide Beach and enter the charming town centre – now, why not treat yourself to a coffee or lunch to celebrate your achievement?
